STD code stands for Subscriber Trunk Dialing. STD Codes in India are assigned to cities, Town, Villages. Metro cities with largest population has 2 digit STD codes. Where as tier-2 cities in India have 3 or more digits in STD codes. STD codes are associated with Land Line phones or Fixed Line wired connections. These lines are primarily issued by MTNL in Mumbai/Delhi and BSNL for rest of India. Reliance, Airtel & Tata also has some share to landlines.

While calling any such landline or fixed line one need to prefix the actual phone number with STD code. For Example if you are calling to Mumbai number 25331234 you need to prefix this with 022.
